Hello:
I just purchased a California Sport Custom built on a 1939 Nash Chassis and powered
by a 1939 Nash straight six engine. These handcrafted sports customs are a rare find
and represent American craftsmanship at its best. This car is unusual as it has European lines.
The front of the car retains 1939 Nash Ambassador components.
I do not know very much about Nash cars. This car ran until seven years ago. My first
task is to get the car to run, stop and steer. Can you help steer me
( J ) in the direction
of someone who sells 1939 Nash brake parts and steering parts? Or parts in general…
for this car?>
Any help would be appreciated. The plan is to restore the car this winter including new
paint an interior.
Below are photos, and below that a detailed account of its history.
Regards
Guy Dirkin, Ph.D

Killer stance when you see her in person. Lots of presence, big, elegant and powerful lines. With a set of healthier tires and all the carbs barely poking up thru hood and a long low -profile air cleaner this car is
impressive by any standards
Owner of last 40 years still alive and living in Carmichael Ca. Driving regularly till he sold to gentleman 7 years ago that got terminally ill just a year after buying car. (Licensed and registered right up till then) Widow had neighbor bring the car to the L.A. Roadster show last month where I purchased before anyone could get to it- and they were ALL OVER IT!! Many upset they did not get a shot to buy her. We put sold sign on immediately,
would not even entertain other offers or give up pricing on her. Really fried more than a few potential buyers...the upside? Showed how interested and excited folks were about this hidden barn find Special.
Special has been off the radar, never flogged around or for sale and no pricing attached! Barn find 1950's Ca. Custom Sports Car- pretty rare air these days.
Could probably start driving her again with just clean fuel, brakes re-done and a few odds and ends while doing sanding and paint. This is a real historically significant Late 40's Custom car not a dream never finished.
Being a Two seater Sports Car with European Influence (quite rare at this
point in the custom world- were there ANY others!?!?) with a big straight six, tri-power, Floor stick shift manual trans, Orig. Ca. pink slip, the Orig. Ca. black plates and documented ownership - pretty much checks all the boxes.
This car exemplifies every bit of the Car Craft and Skill of this Period Custom Car building - the hard stuff! Z'd chassis, channeled, chopped, sectioned, stretched, modified and all real steel and lead. ( No backyard project or quick chop + pull off a couple fenders here). This Custom Sports Car probably took years even by the skilled custom fabricators who obviously built her.
Work we have done so far since arrived - Started her!. Converted to 12 volts . Bolted on one more junk carb for visual - (need one more), opened up hood to original hole for the tri -power, began a mild sanding/cleaning.
The old wide whites still stay up and hold air!
Impressive presence -16 feet long, 72" wide, 104" wheelbase and low!!
Two men fit inside easily with tons of room.
This car was most certainly built by VERY skilled period builders of Customs/ Specials.
There were a bunch of these Famous guys in Central and Nor Cal in the 40's - 50's when/where this car was built.
Have not found the original builder (yet!), we are in contact with the owner who bought it from the original builder! He is documented on the old Original Ca. pink.
He drove the car for 40 years. Right up until he sold it 7 years ago.
Has Calif. reg. thru 2007. Next owner put car in storage, passed away shortly after.
Widow sold car to me thru agent at the L.A Roadster Show- just as stored last 7 years.
I know, I know, next Quest.- why not simply ask man who bought the car almost 50 years ago for builders name? We did!
He has been absolutely furious at himself for not remembering the builder's name for all these years. He only remembers he purchased in Carmichael Ca. from the Original Ca. builder.
With research and photo's someone WILL certainly know this car - way to Radical to not recognize. She is not a backyard build. This is 100% real deal, pro-built custom of the period - for certain, guaranteed, end of
subject, period, absolutely - fo sho.
Many famous builders hail from that area including Joe Bailon and a host of others. It is just going to require old photo's, time, conversations ,old mags, car show results , etc., etc.
When, not if, the builder is found many doors should open with this car. Way ahead of it's time.
Were there even ANY other custom 2-seat Sports Car Specials known to exist then?????
Certainly not by any American Mfg.'s.
